The journey began eight years ago when Matthew and his team at ME embarked on a mission to restore the cottage's heart and soul. Owners Peter and Karen, with a vision to keep the cottage as the focal point of their home, sought to revive its essence amidst a sea of changes.

The entry, a finely crafted steel staircase, is a masterpiece in itself. Locally fabricated, it's a testament to precision and craftsmanship. Eagle describes it as a carefully choreographed 'gymnastics' act, seamlessly integrating into the cottage's narrow side while adhering to strict boundary regulations.
As you ascend, an open verandah welcomes you, a space that once shuttered now breathes life again. Inside, the cottage's rooms have been meticulously repaired, with a finely detailed screen hinting at its former dividing walls. Textured glass, remade doors, and honest cypress boards create an atmosphere that feels both familiar and refreshed.
And this is the part most people miss: ME's design resists the common trend of relegating the cottage to a mere sleeping zone. Here, public and private spaces coexist in parallel, with a long circulation spine bringing order and retaining the house's social essence. Matthew wanted the cottage to remain an integral part of the street, a living, breathing presence.
At the threshold of old and new, the spatial sequence takes an intriguing turn. The extension, pulled away from the cottage, creates a courtyard - a pocket of nature and light. An external blind provides shade when needed, but in winter, it glows with warmth.
