Getz: White Sox Expect To Be "Very Active" Following Robert Trade
The recent trade of Luis Robert Jr. to the Mets has freed up $20MM in the White Sox's 2026 budget. General Manager Chris Getz expressed his intention to be "very active" with the newfound financial flexibility, aiming to strengthen the team's roster. Despite the trade, the White Sox still have ample payroll space, with their current Opening Day payroll at $193MM.
The team's outfield is in need of improvement, with Andrew Benintendi's contract not meeting expectations. The White Sox have several options for center and right field, including Luisangel Acuña, who can also play infield, and prospects like Chase Meidroth and Colson Montgomery. Other outfield players include utilityman Brooks Baldwin, journeyman Derek Hill, and DFA pickup Everson Pereira.
The infield is more stable, with Montgomery, Meidroth, and Miguel Vargas contributing. NPB star Munetaka Murakami will join the team at first base. The White Sox also have young backstops Kyle Teel and Edgar Quero.
Both the rotation and bullpen could benefit from veteran reinforcements. The team has signed Anthony Kay and Sean Newcomb, but the rotation lacks overall experience. Free agency offers opportunities, with names like Griffin Canning, Chris Bassitt, Aaron Civale, Jose Quintana, Lucas Giolito, and Martin Perez available. Rebound candidates include Walker Buehler, Nestor Cortes, and Chris Paddack.
The White Sox have not made a major signing like Cody Bellinger or Framber Valdez due to financial constraints and the team's rebuild focus. Free agents like Zac Gallen are also considered, but the cost of acquiring him would be significant. The team is exploring trade options, with players like Jose Berrios, Kodai Senga, Taijuan Walker, and Eduardo Rodriguez available at minimal cost.
