"I am incredibly happy, particularly with the way I clinched the victory today," expressed the Belgian champion. "It has been quite some time since I managed to finish a race like this. In the past, I was known for my ability to execute a strong finish during the last lap, but I felt I had lost some of that edge in recent years. It feels wonderful to reclaim that signature style once again."
In his approach to the race, Nys kept a close watch on Van Aert, recognizing the difficulty of creating a gap on such a dry and flat course. "The key was to conserve energy for the final laps," he explained. "I tried to apply pressure at certain points, but it was challenging to make a significant impact. Still, I felt exceptionally strong and in control today. I believe this was one of my best performances of the season."
As the race unfolded, all eyes were on Van Aert, not only due to his acclaimed status in the sport but also because he had recently secured two second-place finishes. A three-time winner in Dendermonde, expectations were high for him to add to that tally. However, after the third lap, he found himself in 11th place, lagging eight seconds behind the leader, Felipe Orts Lloret from Ridley Racing Team.
Van Aert made a determined push one lap later, successfully catching up with the leading group by the fifth lap. Despite his efforts, he appeared less comfortable than his opponents during the more technical sections of the course. He finally took the lead on lap 8 out of 12, maintaining a strong pace for several minutes, yet the high speeds enabled his competitors to take advantage of the draft behind him.
Although he briefly regained momentum on lap ten, leading for most of that segment, the exertion began to take its toll. By lap 11, he slipped back as others overtook him, struggling to regain his position amidst the narrow course and rapid pace. Ultimately, Sweeck surged ahead, guiding Nys into the final lap. Nys made several attempts to pass Sweeck and succeeded just before a sandy descent.
Sweeck, who had been in contention for the win, began to fade as Del Grosso pushed forward, seeking to overtake Nys before the final sprint. "I really wanted to compete for the win. It was a tricky race due to the speed," Del Grosso remarked. "I had a bit of bad luck with a flat tire, but I was pleased to get back into the race for the win. Fortunately, I was able to position myself near the front in Laurens's slipstream, which allowed me to recover a bit. But in the end, Thibau had a little extra speed for that last lap."
With this outcome, Sweeck remains the leader in the World Cup standings, but his lead over Nys has narrowed to just three points as the season approaches its final four races.
