Houston's skywatchers were in for a treat on Monday evening, as a mesmerizing light display captivated the city. The phenomenon, which has become increasingly common, left commuters and onlookers alike in awe.
One Reddit user, driving west towards Highway 6 with her husband, described the experience: "As I watched, the light seemed to expand and contract, always shrouded in a foggy veil." Initially, she thought it might be a small plane hidden behind clouds, but soon realized something was amiss. "I saw helicopters flying overhead without any obstruction, and then I noticed there was no overcast tonight."
The light continued to pulse and shift, and even appeared to be joined by a smaller companion drifting towards the Galleria. The witness, captivated by the sight, lamented not recording the event, concluding it was a UFO. "I'm a bit creeped out, but it was an incredible experience."
Many others also witnessed the spectacle. One commenter shared, "I saw it in the parking lot of Kirby Ice House at 6 pm. It seemed constantly obscured by light cloud cover." Another relieved observer exclaimed, "Omg, I saw that too! Thanks for posting, now I know I'm not insane."
Some added a touch of humor to the situation. One commenter joked, "That's Mattress Mack returning home for the holidays," while another quipped, "The aliens visited Houston and quickly decided to roll up their windows and head to a different planet."
Reports of the mysterious lights even extended beyond Houston, with sightings in Dallas and College Station.
But here's where it gets intriguing: despite the extraterrestrial vibes, the source was surprisingly mundane. Around the same time, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 29 Starlink satellites from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Booster 1067 took off, propelling an upper stage and 29 broadband satellites into the sky for its 32nd flight. The rocket departed at 5:26 p.m. EST (2226 GMT Dec. 8) from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
The first stage climbed for about two and a half minutes before separating and returning to Earth for a propulsive landing on the droneship "Just Read the Instructions" in the Atlantic. The upper stage continued its ascent, coasting and firing its Merlin engine before deploying the Starlink Group 6-92 satellites roughly an hour after liftoff.
With over 9,100 Starlink satellites now orbiting Earth, SpaceX's Falcon 9 launch marked its 148th of the year, providing broadband access to underserved areas and supporting WiFi on commercial flights, as well as limited cell-to-satellite service.
And this is the part most people miss: the stunning light show witnessed across Texas was a result of this routine SpaceX launch. So, the next time you see a mysterious light in the sky, remember, it might just be a technological marvel rather than an otherworldly visitor.
