Remembering Guy Hovis: The Life and Legacy of a 'Lawrence Welk Show' Legend (2026)

A cherished voice from the golden age of television has fallen silent. Guy Hovis, the immensely popular singer who graced "The Lawrence Welk Show" with his talent for years, has passed away at the age of 84. His departure leaves a void deeply felt by his fans and former colleagues.

The news, announced with profound sadness by his ex-wife and former performance partner, Ralna English, has sent ripples of sorrow through the entertainment community. English, who was married to Hovis from 1969 to 1984 and frequently shared the stage with him on the iconic ABC and KTLA musical variety program, took to Facebook to share the heartbreaking update. She revealed that Hovis had been hospitalized for several weeks prior to his passing on Thursday, January 22nd. While the specific cause of death has not been disclosed, English shared that he passed away peacefully.

"As it has for me, this will come as a shock to many of you," English, 83, conveyed, her words echoing the sentiment of disbelief and grief. "Guy has been in the hospital for several weeks. I spoke briefly with him on Monday and was deeply concerned." She continued, her voice heavy with emotion, "He took a turn for the worse and it hurts me to tell you, but he died peacefully last night. Needless to say, at this time we are all devastated and simply trying to cope with this tragic news."

English also extended her gratitude to Hovis' vast legion of fans for their unwavering prayers and support during this incredibly difficult time for his family.

The Lennon Sisters, another beloved ensemble who were regulars on "The Lawrence Welk Show" throughout its impressive 30-year run (1951-1982), also paid a heartfelt tribute to Hovis. In their own touching Facebook post, they expressed their shock and sorrow upon hearing the news from Ralna. They fondly remembered Hovis not only as a "very, very dear friend" but also as an "amazing, talented singer with a voice that was beyond perfection." They further described him as a "very kind, true, loyal friend...And handsome on top of all that." Their message concluded with a poignant declaration: "He will be truly missed and forever in our hearts."

But here's where it gets interesting about their on-screen chemistry... Hovis and English first joined forces on "The Lawrence Welk Show" during a special Christmas episode in 1969. Although English was already a featured soloist, their impromptu duet proved to be an instant sensation. The overwhelming positive reception from viewers was so significant that Lawrence Welk himself, a pioneer of what became known as "Champagne music," couldn't ignore it. He reportedly received a "ton of mail" after their performance, prompting him to invite them back repeatedly.

In a past interview with WTVA in 2024, Hovis recalled, "He’d never had a husband/wife team on his show. So after, he tried to have me back one more time, just to make sure the mail wasn’t a fluke." The continued fan enthusiasm confirmed their appeal, leading Welk to officially ask Hovis to join the show with English. "In February of 1970, Guy and Ralna started their 12 years on the regular show," Hovis shared.

And this is the part most people miss about their enduring partnership... Despite their divorce in 1984 after 15 years of marriage, Guy Hovis and Ralna English maintained an extraordinary bond and continued to perform together. In 2012, English spoke about their unique professional relationship to the New Hampshire Union Leader, stating, "Guy and I have a ball working together. We just love being on stage performing together."

Born Guy Lee Hovis, Jr. in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1941, Hovis' musical journey began at the tender age of 5 singing in church. His prolific career saw him record 15 albums. Beyond his musical endeavors, Hovis also served his community, returning to his native Mississippi in 1990 to work as state director for former US Senator Trent Lott until 2007. A testament to his national recognition, Hovis had the honor of singing "Let the Eagle Soar" at George W. Bush’s presidential inauguration in 2005.

As we reflect on Guy Hovis' remarkable life and career, we're left with his beautiful music and the memories he created. What are your fondest memories of Guy Hovis and "The Lawrence Welk Show"?
