The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) has unveiled a selection of new medications for 2026, offering hope and relief for various medical conditions. Among the first batch of drugs listed, adalimumab (sold as Humira) has been expanded to treat juvenile idiopathic arthritis, a condition that affects up to 30,100 Australians aged 0-24 years. This medication, already approved for other pediatric immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, works by calming the immune system and reducing inflammation, bringing down the cost from $650 per script to $25 following the reduction of PBS co-payments that came into effect on January 1st. Odevixibat (sold as Bylvay), a treatment for progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis, a rare genetic liver disease, is also listed for the first time. Ublituximab (sold as Briumvi), approved for use as a treatment for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), is another addition to the PBS. This medication acts upon B-cells that cause inflammation, helping to reduce relapses and slow disease progression. With more than 14,000 patients using comparable treatments through the PBS in 2024, the cost of a script without subsidy is around $15,000. The maximum cost of PBS medicines has been reduced from $31.60 to $25 on January 1st, 2026, and the concessional co-payment will remain at $7.70 until 2030. But here's where it gets controversial...
