A chilling mystery has gripped Madhya Pradesh, leaving three dead and two hospitalized after consuming sweets from an abandoned bag. But here's where it gets even more disturbing: what initially seemed like a tragic case of food poisoning is now being investigated as a potential act of targeted poisoning. Could this be a deliberate attack, and if so, who was the intended target?
The saga began on January 9th, when a mysterious bag was discovered outside a Public Health Engineering (PHE) office in Chhindwara. Inside, alongside raw vegetables, was a box of cashew-garnished pedas—a type of sweet not typically found in local shops, raising immediate red flags. When no one claimed the bag, PHE security guard Dasaru Yaduvanshi took it home, unknowingly setting off a chain of tragic events.
Yaduvanshi shared the sweets with Sundar Lal Kathuria (72), his wife Santoshi Bai, and their granddaughter Khushboo (22) at the family’s tea stall near the PHE office. Within hours, all who consumed the sweets began experiencing severe symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, and a rapid, uncontrollable drop in blood pressure. Yaduvanshi was the first to succumb, passing away on January 11. Sundar Lal followed two days later, and Khushboo, despite initial signs of recovery, tragically died on Wednesday morning at AIIMS-Nagpur, her body failing due to multi-organ collapse.
And this is the part most people miss: Khushboo’s personal life adds a troubling layer to the case. Her sister, Shraddha, revealed that Khushboo had recently returned to her parents’ home with her three-month-old child, fleeing alleged harassment and threats from her in-laws after a love marriage. Shraddha even pointed a finger at her sister’s father-in-law, suggesting a potential motive. Were the sweets meant for Khushboo, or was this a random act of malice?
Investigators are now probing whether the bag’s placement was deliberate and if the victims were specifically targeted. The absence of identification marks on the box and the unusual type of sweets have deepened suspicions. Assistant Superintendent of Police Ashish Khare acknowledged that the case is far from straightforward. “We’re exploring all angles, including the possibility of personal vendettas or intentional tampering,” he stated.
Santoshi Bai, Khushboo’s mother, remains hospitalized but out of danger, while Khushboo’s sister, who also consumed the sweets, has been discharged. Autopsy results and forensic tests on the sweets are pending, but one thing is clear: this is no ordinary poisoning case.
Here’s the controversial question: Could this be a premeditated act of revenge, or are we looking at a random tragedy? The Kathuria family, now grieving the loss of two members, runs the tea stall near where the bag was found. Was this a coincidence, or was their proximity to the PHE office a calculated move by the perpetrator?
As the investigation unfolds, one thing is certain: this case has left the community shaken and searching for answers. What do you think? Could this be a targeted attack, or is there another explanation? Share your thoughts in the comments—this mystery is far from solved.
