Michael Page, the former Bellator star, finds himself in a perplexing situation with the UFC matchmakers. Despite joining the UFC with high expectations in 2024, his recent fight announcement has left him and fans alike scratching their heads.
Page, known as "MVP," has an impressive 3-1 record inside the octagon, with notable wins over Jared Cannonier, the previously undefeated Shara Bullet, and Kevin Holland. However, his upcoming fight against Sam Patterson at UFC London feels like a step in the wrong direction. Page expresses confusion over the matchmaking, questioning why he's been paired with an opponent he considers "weird."
"When you look at the co-main event and the entire card, it lacks excitement. I expected my name to bring some buzz, but instead, I'm placed in a peculiar position. It's as if I've upset someone, and I'm left wondering why," Page shared in an interview with MMA Junkie.
At 38 years old, Page built a reputation for his spectacular finishes and viral moments during his Bellator days. However, in the UFC, he hasn't yet delivered a knockout victory, which might be a factor in the matchmakers' hesitation.
"I think the issue could be my lack of finishes. The UFC might be looking for fighters known for spectacular endings, and I haven't delivered one yet. That's just my speculation. But I've had exciting fights, and the UFC has promoted and posted my performances. I feel I've put on a show, even without the knockout," Page explained.
As Page steps into the cage against Patterson, he'll face a rising talent in the welterweight division. Patterson, with four straight first-round wins, could climb the contender ranks with a victory over Page. Adding to Page's challenges, he and Patterson have trained together in the past and maintain a friendly relationship.
After beating Cannonier at UFC 319, Page actively sought his next opponent but encountered roadblocks. The welterweight division seems stagnant, awaiting the next title fight for champion Islam Makhachev. Page expresses frustration over the limited opportunities.
"The welterweight division feels like a traffic jam. Nothing's moving, and it's frustrating. If I were naturally bigger, I'd consider moving to middleweight. So, I explored other options, but nothing exciting emerged. I even questioned if the UFC was being truthful about potential opponents. It got to the point where we had to confirm with coaches and fighters to understand their disinterest in facing MVP," Page revealed.
Page, known for calling his own shots, finds this approach less effective in the UFC. With a solid win record and an unorthodox fighting style, he wonders if his success has become a hindrance.
"My unique style might be a double-edged sword now. It makes accepting fights against me more challenging. I'm not sure how the UFC views me and my style. This fight doesn't seem to offer much growth for me, even with a win. I don't feel favored by the UFC right now," Page concluded.
But here's where it gets controversial... Is Page's unconventional style the real reason for the UFC's hesitation, or is it simply the role he's expected to play at this stage of his career? Either way, UFC London holds high stakes for both Page and Patterson.
