Imagine coming home after a long day, only to find you can't park anywhere near your house. This is the frustrating reality for residents of Kingswood, who are battling a persistent parking problem.
For weeks, streets near the Royal Mail delivery office have been overrun with Royal Mail vans, effectively turning residential areas into a company car park. This issue has left residents scrambling for parking spaces, often forcing them to park far from their homes, and creating a sense of unease, especially at night.
According to reports, approximately a dozen parking spaces are occupied daily by Royal Mail vans. One resident, Debbie Fudge, described Woodland Terrace as a "Royal Mail car park." Fern Colebrook, another resident, recounted seeing 11 Royal Mail vans parked on her road in a single morning. She also pointed out that the vans are often parked illegally, including on double yellow lines and over gated driveways.
This isn't a new problem. Royal Mail previously apologized for similar issues back in November, but the problem has seemingly shifted to other nearby roads. The situation has become particularly acute in the past six months, according to Miss Fudge, who has lived in the area for 17 years.
But here's where it gets controversial... The parking woes seem to be linked to the South Gloucestershire Council's introduction of charges in its car parks in May. Residents suggest that Royal Mail used to utilize car parks on Bank Road and Cecil Road, which are close to the delivery office. Now, with those options potentially less appealing, the vans are spilling over into residential areas.
Miss Fudge expressed concern that the situation will worsen as the council implements yellow lines on several streets, including Summit Close, Orchard Road, Edward Road, and Woodland Terrace. The council stated that this temporary scheme could last up to 18 months, with the possibility of becoming permanent after a review.
Adding to the frustration, local businesses are also feeling the impact. John Smith, who runs Odds & Todds on Hanham Road, says the parking issue is affecting his trade, as customers struggle to find spaces. He also claims that when Royal Mail staff move their vans, they often fill the spaces with their own cars, meaning spaces never become available for residents or visitors.
And this is the part most people miss... Royal Mail has declined to comment further on the issue.
