The Climate Crisis Conundrum: A Tale of Coastal Contradictions
In a move that has sparked controversy, former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, recently acquired an $8.2 million seaside mansion in Malibu. This acquisition raises eyebrows, especially considering Harris's vocal stance on the 'climate crisis' and its potential impact on coastal communities.
But here's where it gets intriguing: Harris's new abode boasts amenities like a gas stove and fireplace, which are precisely the kind of features the Biden-Harris administration sought to regulate, citing environmental concerns.
The mansion, described as a 'prime coastal location' with breathtaking ocean views, sits near Point Dume State Beach. According to climate models endorsed by the administration, this beach is at risk of severe flooding due to rising sea levels. In fact, a climate model developed by the Biden-Harris administration predicts that Point Dume could face significant damage, even under conservative projections.
The purchase, first reported by the New York Post, casts doubt on Harris's sincerity regarding the threats posed by climate change. In her own words, she wrote, 'Our oceans are warming. Sea levels are rising. Extreme weather is destroying our communities. We are poisoning the planet.' Yet, her actions seem to contradict these warnings.
As a senator, Harris cosponsored the Living Shorelines Act, advocating for $50 million in federal funding annually to combat sea level rise. She emphasized the need to 'mitigate against sea level rise and prepare for extreme weather.' However, weeks later, she shared a Washington Post article highlighting how Ventura County, where her new mansion is located, has warmed significantly since 1895, more than any other county evaluated.
During her vice presidency, Harris continued to warn of climate change's impact on coastal areas. She even became the chief spokeswoman for President Biden's Climate-Ready Coasts initiative, distributing grants to coastal communities affected by climate change. Ironically, a study published by the Biden-Harris administration's Interior Department predicted that up to 75% of California's beaches could erode completely by 2100.
Harris's new home, with its gas stove and fireplace, seems to contradict the very regulations she supported. The administration's proposed rules aimed to ban half of the gas stove models available and a significant portion of tankless water heaters. Yet, these features are present in her luxurious mansion.
And this is the part most people miss: Harris's office declined to comment on the matter.
Harris isn't alone in this paradox. Former President Barack Obama also purchased a coastal property on Martha's Vineyard, projected to be underwater within 75 years, according to federally funded climate models.
