Heartbreak struck the Orlando Magic as Jalen Suggs, their dynamic point guard, was forced to leave the court with a hip injury during a crucial NBA Cup semifinal game against the New York Knicks. This unfortunate event not only cost the Magic a shot at victory but also potentially sidelines a key player for an extended period. Tim Bontemps, a senior NBA writer for ESPN.com, reported on the situation, providing insights into the game and the impact of Suggs' injury.
Suggs, who had an outstanding first half with 25 points, was locked in a scoring battle with Knicks star Jalen Brunson. However, in the third quarter, while driving to the basket, he suffered a left hip injury. Despite attempting to play through the pain, Suggs was visibly uncomfortable and eventually had to exit the game.
"It's the part that sucks the most," Suggs admitted, expressing his disappointment at being sidelined. He emphasized his desire to be on the court, fighting alongside his teammates. The injury occurred when OG Anunoby stole the ball from him. Suggs immediately grabbed his hip and showed signs of pain. He attempted to play through it, but was forced to leave the game.
This is not the first time Suggs has faced setbacks due to injuries. Having missed at least 20 games in three of his first four NBA seasons, he's unfortunately become accustomed to dealing with and recovering from injuries. He had also recently returned from a knee surgery that ended his previous season in January.
His teammate, Paolo Banchero, highlighted Suggs' resilience, noting that he had been playing through pain in recent games and giving his all for the team. "We don't want to lose him," Banchero stated, emphasizing the impact Suggs has on the team. Desmond Bane also praised Suggs' dedication, saying he "wants to win more than anything."
But here's where it gets controversial... Suggs' injury occurred after one of the best offensive halves of his NBA career. He was flying out in transition and repeatedly getting to the basket.
Suggs and the Magic are now returning to Orlando, where he will undergo evaluation to determine the extent of his injury and the potential recovery timeline.
