Batchewana First Nation (BFN) and Alamos Gold Inc. are embarking on a journey towards a greener future, taking the next step in their joint clean energy endeavor. This project aims to bring renewable power to the Island Gold district, a move that could revolutionize the region's energy landscape.

An application for expropriation has been submitted to the Ontario Energy Board, marking a pivotal moment in this ambitious initiative. This step ensures the project aligns with Ontario's clean energy vision and promises long-term advantages for the area.
"BFN's energy vision is a sustainable, economically vibrant, and reconciled future," proclaimed Chief Mark McCoy. "Through our investment in transmission and renewable energy, we actively contribute to Ontario's clean energy transition, reduce our environmental footprint, and foster local economic prosperity. These endeavors embody the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation by empowering Indigenous-led initiatives, promoting equal opportunities, and safeguarding our lands for generations to come."
The project, an extension of the partnership between BFN and Alamos, involves constructing a 115-kilovolt transmission line to the Island Gold district. Scheduled to be operational by 2026, this line will be owned and managed by Batchewana First Nation, symbolizing a significant stride towards Indigenous energy sovereignty and economic self-reliance.
John A. McCluskey, Alamos Gold's president, emphasized, "This infrastructure is a symbol of our alliance with BFN, promoting Indigenous economic empowerment and our shared dedication to clean energy." He added, "Upon completion, it will integrate our mining operations into Ontario's clean energy network, significantly reducing our carbon footprint."
