Flu Season in Kazakhstan: Over 111,000 ARVI Cases Reported in Karaganda Region (2026)

A staggering 111,000 cases of ARVI (Acute Respiratory Viral Infection) have been reported in the Karaganda region, and the numbers are rising. This alarming situation has sparked concerns among health officials and the community.

The predominant strain identified by laboratories is the seasonal flu virus A (H3N2), which is known to circulate during this time of year. Between October 1st and 8th, a total of 111,086 ARVI cases were recorded, with a worrying 59% of these cases affecting children under the age of 14. Furthermore, a staggering 76% of these children had not been vaccinated against the flu.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the relevance of influenza strains A (H1N1), A (H3N2), and B this season, all of which are covered by the current flu vaccine. Despite this, only 176,014 locals have been vaccinated so far.

The impact of this epidemiological situation is being felt in schools as well. As of December 8th, 23 schools and 63 classes had infection rates exceeding the threshold by more than 30%, resulting in 899 students being moved to online learning.

Doctors are urging the public to take necessary precautions. They advise avoiding crowded places, limiting contact with individuals exhibiting cold symptoms, practicing regular handwashing and using disinfectants, and consuming foods rich in vitamin C. Seeking prompt medical attention at the first signs of illness and avoiding self-treatment are also strongly recommended.

This situation is not isolated to the Karaganda region. Qazinform has reported a surge in flu cases across the Kostanay region as well.

With the flu season in full swing, it's crucial to stay informed and take proactive measures to protect ourselves and our communities. But here's where it gets controversial: Should we rely solely on vaccines, or are there other preventive measures we should focus on? What are your thoughts on this?
