In a move that has sparked concern and controversy, the Estonian government is contemplating the closure of its border with Russia. The catalyst for this decision? An incident where three Russian border guards inadvertently (or so it seems) crossed into Estonian territory.
According to ERR, the government is actively discussing its next steps. Estonian Minister of the Interior, Igor Taro, has outlined various closure strategies, from local to long-term, temporary to permanent measures. But here's where it gets controversial: Taro questions the Russian guards' geographical understanding, suggesting they might need a map.
"They seem to have lost their way, which is absurd given the border's longevity. If they can't navigate a map, how can we assist? Should we provide them with one?" Taro's statement leaves us with more questions than answers.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna adds to the narrative, highlighting Russia's persistent attempts to shift the border, especially in complex geographic areas. He cites incidents like the armed Russian presence in Saatsa Bay in October and the theft of border buoys from the Narva River in 2024.
And this is the part most people miss: there's an unratified border agreement between Estonia and Russia, which Russia has refused to sign. Tsahkna believes this agreement offers little hope for a peaceful resolution.
"Today, I see no real prospect for a border treaty between our nations. Russia will exploit these risks. Our focus must be on defining our territories, maintaining control, and avoiding provocations."
The incident on December 18, where three uniformed Russian guards appeared at the Vasknarva pier on the Narva River, only adds fuel to the fire. They left before Estonian authorities could intervene, leaving many questions unanswered.
