Christian Horner has made a striking claim: he believes that Daniel Ricciardo could have clinched a world championship title had it not been for circumstances beyond his control at Red Bull Racing. During his tenure at the Milton Keynes-based team, Ricciardo emerged as one of Formula 1’s most exciting talents, yet his career coincided with an era dominated by Mercedes.
Despite his undeniable talent, Ricciardo never managed to secure a championship while racing for Red Bull. His journey in F1 began with HRT in 2011, before he quickly moved to Toro Rosso, the sister team of Red Bull, where he made a name for himself and earned a promotion to the main team within just two years. Notably, in his debut season with Red Bull, he achieved what many thought impossible: defeating the four-time World Champion, Sebastian Vettel. However, that season is often overshadowed by the narrative of Red Bull losing its championships to Mercedes, rather than Ricciardo's personal triumph over a reigning champion.
Throughout his time with Red Bull, which included seven grand prix victories, Ricciardo faced constant comparisons to Vettel, whose departure from the team marked a shift in focus. Following this, the struggles with Renault engines failing to match Mercedes’ performance further complicated Ricciardo's chances of success. The arrival of Max Verstappen, a prodigious talent who won on his debut at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, created additional pressure. While Ricciardo outperformed Verstappen in two of their three seasons together, the narrative had shifted in favor of the younger driver, positioning him as the future star of Red Bull.
The situation reached a boiling point during the 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where a collision between teammates led to public blame directed at Ricciardo from the team. This incident reportedly pushed Ricciardo to leave for Renault, after Red Bull opted to switch to Honda engines. He later joined McLaren, but his return to the Red Bull family within their sister team did not revive his dreams of championship glory.
After an illustrious career, Ricciardo announced his retirement following the Singapore Grand Prix in late 2024. What led to the dramatic decline of this once-promising star? Some intriguing theories suggest a mix of external pressures and internal team dynamics played significant roles in his trajectory.
Horner reflected on Ricciardo’s impact with fondness, stating, "Daniel is simply a fantastic individual. He has an infectious personality that brightens up any room he enters. He possesses both charm and sensitivity, and we had an immediate rapport. He was truly an outstanding driver. Sadly, during his peak, we didn’t provide him with the most competitive car available on the grid. I genuinely believe that with the right equipment, he could have become a world champion. The sport is certainly missing someone like Daniel."
Looking ahead, Horner will be sharing insights about his career and experiences in a three-part speaking tour across Australia, titled "A Special Evening with Christian Horner," where he will discuss not only Red Bull’s successes but also his aspirations for a potential return to the grid with Alpine.
