A beloved Calgary cafe, Angel's Cafe, is facing an unexpected challenge that threatens its existence. The city's urgent project to replace a critical water pipe has left the cafe with a shocking 30-day eviction notice.
For 28 years, Angel's Cafe has been a staple along the Bow River at Edworthy Park, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere to locals and visitors alike. However, the recent acceleration of the Bearspaw feeder main replacement project has turned their world upside down.
Cathy Jacobs, the cafe's owner, signed a five-year lease just six months ago, only to receive the devastating news that they must relocate within a month. "There was no warning, no compassion, just a mandate," Jacobs shared with Global News. The cafe's parking lot is now one of three staging areas for construction crews, leaving Jacobs and her team in a state of uncertainty.
But here's where it gets controversial: the city's decision to expedite the project has put Angel's Cafe in a difficult position. Jacobs is now considering permanently closing the business as early as this Sunday, leaving a dedicated team, including a single father of four, without their livelihood.
"I didn't sleep all night after getting the notice," Jacobs said. "This is their lifeline, and it's being threatened."
The city's original timeline had construction starting in the spring, with an estimated completion date of 2028. However, concerns over the existing feeder main's potential to rupture again, coupled with a limited water supply in the Glenmore Reservoir, have prompted an expedited timeline, aiming to finish the entire replacement by December.
And this is the part most people miss: the city's statement acknowledges the impact on nearby residents and businesses, promising active communication and support. Yet, for Angel's Cafe, the reality is a sudden displacement with little room for negotiation.
The project involves installing a new steel pipe parallel to the existing line, with the first phase utilizing microtunnelling techniques due to the need to cross major roadways, the river, and a rail line. The second stage, currently in the design phase, is expected to bring further disruptions to the area.
Ward 7 Coun. Myke Atkinson, who represents the area, expressed his disappointment, saying, "It's unfortunate that a business doing great work in the community has to be relocated."
According to the notice, Angel's Cafe must vacate the property by February 22nd, including a full teardown of the building. Jacobs is left with the daunting task of packing up and finding a new home for her business within days.
"I have to pack everything up and move it somewhere, but I don't know where," Jacobs said.
