Reese Confirms Return to Sky for Third Season
DURHAM, N.C. — Angel Reese, a key player for the Chicago Sky, has confirmed her intention to return for the team's third season in the WNBA. Despite a challenging end to her second season, which included a team-issued suspension, Reese remains committed to the franchise.
Reese's commitment comes after speculation about her future following her late-season suspension. In a recent interview, she expressed her desire to continue her journey with the Sky, stating, 'I'm under contract, so yes, I plan on returning to the Sky. I'm working on building relationships with Coach Tyler Marsh and General Manager Jeff Pagliocca.'
Reese is one of four players under contract with Chicago for the upcoming season, joining fellow 2024 all-rookie Kamilla Cardoso and 2025 draftees Hailey Van Lith and Maddy Westbeld. Her second WNBA campaign presented unique challenges, as the team struggled to a 10-34 record, tied for last in the league.
Despite her individual success, including being named an All-Star and improving her statistical output, the Sky's performance was underwhelming. Reese openly discussed the team's struggles in a Chicago Tribune interview, highlighting the need for better talent and improved free-agent acquisitions. She later apologized for any hurt caused to her teammates, but the team still suspended her for half a game for conduct detrimental to the team.
Reese's absence from the court was due to a back injury, which she successfully recovered from by the end of the season. She has since been an active participant in Team USA's training camp, showcasing her dedication and commitment to the sport.
The Sky have experienced similar situations with players demanding trades while still under contract, such as Sylvia Fowles, Elena Delle Donne in 2017, and Kahleah Copper in 2024. Reese's decision to honor her contract provides short-term security for the team, but the long-term outlook remains uncertain if the franchise's direction doesn't improve.
Reese's primary goal is to play with top talent and compete for championships, an opportunity presented by her involvement with Team USA. Her commitment to the Sky, despite recent challenges, highlights her dedication to the team and her desire to contribute to the franchise's success.
