Admiral Alvin Holsey, the commander of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), which oversees U.S. military operations in the region, has retired two years ahead of schedule. This unexpected move comes amidst escalating tensions, particularly with Venezuela, and raises questions about the direction of U.S. foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere.
Admiral Holsey's departure follows a series of high-profile exits from senior military positions since Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth took office. Three U.S. officials and two sources familiar with the situation have indicated that Hegseth pushed for Holsey's early retirement, reportedly due to the Defense Secretary's desire to exert greater control over military operations and planning in the region.
Holsey, who had previously announced his intention to retire in December, has not publicly disclosed the reasons for his early departure. However, in his farewell address, he emphasized the importance of the United States supporting democracies that share its values.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some officials have speculated that Holsey may have disagreed with recent U.S. strikes on suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean. The U.S. has been conducting these strikes, including more than 20 deadly attacks, as part of its efforts to combat drug trafficking. In a closed-door meeting, Holsey insisted that his decision had nothing to do with these operations.
During a ceremony, Holsey formally handed over command to Air Force Lieutenant General Evan Pettus, who will serve as the acting head of SOUTHCOM. The expectation is that Lieutenant General Frank Donovan, vice commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, will be nominated as Holsey's successor, pending Senate confirmation.
And this is the part most people miss... Holsey's early retirement is reminiscent of a similar situation in 2008, when Admiral William Fallon, then commander of Central Command, stepped down early due to disagreements with the Bush administration. This pattern suggests potential underlying tensions within the military leadership.
A significant shift in foreign policy is underway. The Trump administration has signaled a renewed focus on the Western Hemisphere. A strategy document has called for reviving the 19th-century Monroe Doctrine, which asserted the U.S.'s sphere of influence in the Americas. This shift is highlighted by a military buildup in the Caribbean, including the deployment of an aircraft carrier strike group, and increased pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
The situation with Venezuela is particularly tense. The U.S. has seized an oil tanker and is preparing to intercept more ships carrying Venezuelan oil.
