This is the story of Eric Davies, a 95-year-old bandsman whose life has been a symphony of carols and community service. For more than 100 years, the Davies family has been an integral part of The Salvation Army Band in Abergavenny, Wales, and this Christmas, Eric will once again take to the High Street, trumpet in hand, to raise funds for charitable causes. But here’s where it gets truly remarkable: this isn’t just a hobby for Eric—it’s a living legacy that began in the late 19th century.
Eric’s connection to The Salvation Army runs deep, rooted in a family history that reads like a musical saga. His grandmother, Lieutenant Temperance Walkley, arrived in the Welsh valleys in 1896 as a Salvation Army officer. She soon married the local bandmaster, Jack Davies, and their union laid the foundation for a dynasty of musicians. Eric’s father, Arthur, followed in his grandfather’s footsteps, becoming bandmaster himself and teaching Eric to play the cornet as a young boy. And this is the part most people miss: by 1950, when Eric and his brother Cyril officially joined the band, the Davies family single-handedly made up half of the eight-member brass ensemble. Arthur conducted, Cyril played the euphonium, Eric the cornet, and their uncle Harold the medium bass—a true family affair.
One of Eric’s most cherished memories came in 1957 when he was invited to perform at the prestigious Bandmasters’ Councils Festival at the Royal Albert Hall. This wasn’t just any concert—it featured international bands from The Salvation Army, a testament to Eric’s talent and dedication. Fast forward to 2024, and Eric was honored with a long-service award during celebrations marking 140 years of The Salvation Army in Abergavenny and 150 years in Wales. His lifetime of dedication to music and community service hasn’t gone unnoticed.
