In a groundbreaking find, scientists have unearthed a colossal 16-foot-long dinosaur footprint in China, revealing a new species named Fujianipus yingliangi. This discovery, published in the journal iScience, showcases a raptor that could be one of the largest ever known. The footprint, found on a 96-million-year-old muddy riverbank, hints at a creature that may have reached an impressive 16 feet in length.
The Longxiang Track Site: A Fossil Treasure Trove
Paleontologists made this remarkable discovery at the Longxiang track site, renowned for its dense collection of dinosaur footprints. In 2020, they uncovered five large prints, each about 14 inches long, far bigger than any previously found raptor tracks. This site, once a muddy riverbank, is a prehistoric gathering spot, preserving fossilized imprints for millions of years.
Lida Xing, a lead researcher, highlighted the uniqueness of the find: "You know a raptor track when you see it, but these tracks are different from any ever found."

The Fujianipus tracks, remarkably preserved, offer a detailed glimpse into the past. The prints are well-defined, showcasing clear outlines of individual toe pads. Scott Persons, a paleontologist, praised the quality of the details, noting that the tracks resemble those of turkey-sized animals but with strikingly good individual fleshy pads on each toe.
